RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts down to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "They were among thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
